By Christopher Moore
This is probably the most honest thing I’ve ever written. And I’m not here to hold your hand through it. Some of you are gonna hate it, and that’s fine. The truth isn’t supposed to feel good. The sharper it is, the deeper it cuts, and the louder the screaming gets. But the ugly truths? Those are the ones you need to hear the most.
So here’s your gut punch:
We’ve ALL been brainwashed.
Yes, you. Yes, me. Nobody dodged it.
And if your first thought is “Not me”—then congratulations, you’re the most cooked of us all.
Brainwashing—what the academic types dress up as “coercive persuasion”—isn’t just for cult members and prisoners of war. It’s the slow drip that wears a hole in your skull until your own thoughts leak out and someone else’s script gets poured in. Psychologists like Robert Jay Lifton have laid it out: strip away your sense of self, rewrite your worldview, replace it with theirs. And the delivery system? Everything. Politics. Religion. Social media. Commercials. Your friends. Your family. The crap in your newsfeed while you’re on the toilet.
The first hook they set? Making you believe you’re “special” because you wear the jersey of a group. The second your identity is tied to a party, a church, a movement, or a hashtag, they own you. From there, you’re not a person—you’re inventory.
Let’s put it under a spotlight:
“I’m a Democrat.” — Or were you just handed a blue team playbook before you could read?
“I’m a Republican.” — Same trap, different color.
“At least I’m not a leftist snowflake!” — Cool flex. How did strangers you’ve never met become your sworn enemies?
“I’m not a MAGA cultist!” — But if your entire vibe is defined by who you hate, you’re still in a cult.
“I’m a patriot, a recovering alcoholic, a Red Sox fan, a college grad.” — Those are just stickers on your bumper. What’s under the paint?
My turn: I was a U.S. Marine. That forged me. But I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t heavy-duty conditioning baked in. I was brainwashed too. No shame—just the truth.
And now? The new shiny badge online is “I’m woke.” Hate to break it to you, but you just traded one leash for another. Different slogans, same choke collar.
Most of what you think is “yours” was downloaded before you could spell your own name. Preloaded apps. From Saturday morning cartoons to the nightly news your parents swore by, it’s been drip-fed since day one.
I could burn more pages on how addiction, religion, nationalism, and celebrity worship run the same exact playbook: repeat, reward, punish, divide. But fine—let’s skip the autopsy.
Here’s what I’m asking:
Is the programming in your head making you better—or making you easier to herd?
Does your belief system unite and heal—or does it carve the world into “us” and “them”?
Are you thinking—or just parroting the script that keeps you useful to someone else?
Freedom doesn’t start with flags or slogans. It starts with mental sovereignty.
You were born enough. No party, preacher, influencer, or brand made you valuable. But we give that away the second we hand over the keys to our identity.
Thinking for yourself is a knife fight. It’s lonely, ugly, and uncomfortable. You’ll question everything you thought was solid. That’s why most people never go there. But if you’re still here reading, you just might have the spine for it.
That’s it.
Stay dangerous.
Semper Fidelis.
